Σήμερα, κατά την ετήσια Developers Conference Debian «Debconf10», που πραγματοποιήθηκε στη Νέα Υόρκη, οι διαχειριστές εκδόσεων του Debian έχουν ανακοινώσει ένα σημαντικό βήμα στον κύκλο ανάπτυξης της επερχόμενης σταθερής έκδοσης του Debian 6.0 "squeeze":

Debian "Squeeze" έχει πλέον παγώσει.

Κατά συνέπεια αυτό σημαίνει ότι δεν θα προστεθούν περισσότερες νέες δυνατότητες και όλες οι εργασίες θα πρέπει τώρα να επικεντρωθούν στην στίλβωση Debian "Squeeze" για να επιτύχουν την ποιότητα της σταθερής έκδοσης Debian.

Η επερχόμενη έκδοση θα χρησιμοποιεί το Linux kernel 2.6.32 ως προεπιλογή στον εγκαταστάτη και σε όλες τις αρχιτεκτονικές Linux.

Νέα χαρακτηριστικά που περιλαμβάνει η επερχόμενη έκδοση:

* Desktop περιβάλλοντα KDE 4.4.5, Gnome 2.30.0, 0.5.0 LXDE, XFCE 4.6.2, X.org 7.5, το OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 και πολλές άλλες εφαρμογές.

* Σταθερές και τρέχουσες εκδόσεις του λογισμικού διακομιστών κοινού, όπως Apache 2.2.16, PHP 5.3.2, MySQL 5.1.48, PostgreSQL 8.4.4 και Samba 3.4.

* Σύγχρονα interpreters και compilers για όλες τις κύριες γλώσσες, όπως η Python 2.6 και 3.1, Perl 5,10, 6,12 και GHC GCC 4.4.

* DKMS, ένα πλαίσιο για τη δημιουργία Linux kernel modules των οποίων οι πηγές δεν κατοικούν στο δέντρο κώδικα του πυρήνα Linux.

* Dependency-based ordering of init scripts using insserv. (Εξορθολογισμό των init-scripts χρησιμοποιώντας insserv, που θα κανει την εκκινηση του συστήματος γρηγορότερη λόγω παράλληλης εκτέλεσης εντολών.

Ξεκίνησε η προετημασία τεκμηρίωσης για τη διανομή, για την οποία προσελκύουν περισσότερους εθελοντές για να εξασφαλισθεί η μεταφορά στο μεγαλύτερο δυνατό αριθμό γλωσσών.
